Washington Monument

The Washington Monument is a monumental column in the center of the National Mall in downtown Washington, D.C, built to commemorate George Washington, first President of the United States. It was built between 1848 and 1884, and is made of white marble. It is about 555 feet or 169 meters high. The monument stands majestically between the Lincoln Memorial and the U.S. Capitol building.

The monument was not always finished with its present shape because it underwent changes through different periods during its construction process that included different architectural styles. The final design has many symbols that are associated with George Washington’s life including eagles, olive branches, roses, red granite stones from Massachusetts (although these were not part of the original design), and fifty-two fluted Doric columns supporting
